MISSION DIMENSION
SCULPTURE STOP #4
Well done, Agent! You’ve arrived at your final destination, Seventh Decade Garden IX–X by Louise Nevelson.
The artist made this when she turned 70 to mark her seventh decade of life. How would you like to celebrate your next birthday? This is no ordinary “garden.” The artist assembled scrap pieces of metal and painted them in monochrome, or one color, to create unity and focus our attention on other details. What words would you use to describe the shapes and lines? This “garden” is growing out of concrete. What else would you add to it?
Did you notice the concrete is made of polygons, or shapes with many sides? Trapezoids fit together and form a dodecagon under the sculpture. Their lines seem like rays of sunshine, an important ingredient for a garden.
How many sides are on the dodecagon?
How many “stalks” are at the core of this “garden,” beneath the layers of scrap metal?
DODECAGON SIDES ÷ STALKS = ?
THEN, SUBTRACT 1 FOR MONOCHROME = ?
Record this last clue on your Agent Record.
