Want to make something but don’t have clay? Make it out of salt dough! Here’s a recipe:

Salt Dough Recipe

Materials you’ll need: a mixing bowl, water, flour, salt, a rolling pin, a baking sheet or piece of heavy cardboard

Optional materials: toothpicks, cookie cutters, a plastic knife, a straw

Step 1

Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 cup of salt together in a mixing bowl.

Step 2

Slowly mix cold water, a few tablespoons at a time (up to 1 cup total), into the flour mixture until dough is smooth and easy to handle.

Step 3

Knead the dough for 10 minutes and let it rest for 20 minutes.

Step 4

Once the dough has rested, roll it with a rolling pin to make it smooth

Step 5

On a flat surface such as a baking sheet or piece of sturdy cardboard, shape the smooth dough into a bowl or any figure you like! Try using toothpicks, straws, balled-up foil, shells or cookie cutters to push shapes into it.

Step 6

Let your new creation sit quietly at room temperature for several days to a couple of weeks. You can even use the sun to dry your pieces in warm weather.

CAUTION: BE SURE TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE AND AFTER HANDLING THE DOUGH. AND DON’T LET YOUR PETS EAT THE DOUGH OR YOUR FINAL CREATION. IT IS TOXIC TO DOGS.
